Phrase - Prophecy (Fulfilled prophecy )
Quotations from the writings of Ellen G. White with the phrase . . .
In like manner Miller and his associates fulfilled prophecy and gave a message which Inspiration had foretold should be given to the world, but which they could not have given had they fully understood the prophecies pointing out their disappointment, and presenting another message to be preached to all nations before the Lord should come. The first and second angel's messages were given at the right time and accomplished the work which God designed to accomplish by them. Great Controversy, page 405.2 |

The history which the great I AM has marked out in His word, uniting link after link in the prophetic chain, from eternity in the past to eternity in the future, tells us where we are today in the procession of the ages, and what may be expected in the time to come. All that prophecy has foretold as coming to pass, until the present time, has been traced on the pages of history, and we may be assured that all which is yet to come will be fulfilled in its order. ANOTHER QUESTION THEN ARISES: "IF HE WAS MISTAKEN IN THE EVENT, WAS NOT HIS WHOLE WORK AN ERROR?" THAT DOES NOT FOLLOW. THE DISCIPLES OF CHRIST WERE UTTERLY MISTAKEN WHEN HE RODE INTO JERUSALEM, AND THEY HAILED HIM AS A KING WITH TOKENS OF VICTORY. THEY THOUGHT HE WAS THEN TO BE CROWNED A KING ON DAVID'S THRONE. BUT IT WAS NOT AN ERROR IN THEM TO ACT ACCORDING TO THEIR BELIEF; IS SO DOING THEY FULFILLED THE PROPHECY OF ZECH. 9:9, WHICH THEY WOULD NOT HAVE DONE IF THEY HAD REALIZED THAT HE WAS GOING TO JUDGMENT AND TO DEATH. BUT THAT SCRIPTURE MUST BE FULFILLED, IF IT WERE NECESSARY TO MAKE THE STONES CRY OUT. LUKE 19:37-40. IN LIKE MANNER IT APPEARS THAT MR. MILLER AND HIS ASSOCIATES FULFILLED PROPHECY, AND GAVE A PROCLAMATION (SEE REV. 14:6, 7) WHICH THEY WOULD NOT HAVE GIVEN HAD THEY UNDERSTOOD THAT YET OTHER PROCLAMATIONS WERE TO BE MADE BEFORE THE LORD SHOULD COME. Fulfilled this prophecy |
Five hundred years before, the Lord had declared by the prophet Zechariah: "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: He is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass." Zechariah 9: 9. Had the disciples realized that Christ was going to judgment and to death, they could not have fulfilled this prophecy. {GC 405.1} |

Balaam was shown the peculiar favor with which God regarded Israel, and their distinctive character as his chosen people. He saw that the position to be maintained by the Israelites--a complete separation from all surrounding nations--represented the relation which all true Christians should sustain to the world. "The people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations." At the time these words were spoken, the Israelites had no permanent settlement, and their peculiar character, their manners and customs, were not familiar to Balaam. Yet how strikingly was this prophecy fulfilled in the after-history of this people! Through all the years of their captivity in Babylon, through all the ages since they were dispersed among the nations, they have maintained the distinctive characteristics of their nationality and their religion. {ST, December 2, 1880 par. 19} |

When the Pharisees, disturbed and angered by this outburst of rejoicing, wished Jesus to rebuke His disciples, He replied, "If these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out." Luke 19:40. Prophecy must be fulfilled. The disciples were accomplishing the purpose of God; yet they were doomed to a bitter disappointment. But a few days had passed ere they witnessed the Saviour's agonizing death and laid Him in the tomb. Their expectations had not been realized in a single particular, and their hopes died with Jesus. Not till their Lord had come forth triumphant from the grave could they perceive that all had been foretold by prophecy, and "that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead." Acts 17:3. In like manner was prophecy fulfilled in the first and second angels' messages. They were given at the right time and accomplished the work which God designed to accomplish by them. {SR 373.1} |

Pilate was as unwilling as they were that the spectacle of Jesus upon the cross should remain a moment longer than was necessary. The consent of the governor having been obtained, the legs of the two that were crucified with Jesus were broken to hasten their death; but Jesus was already dead, and they broke not his legs. The rude soldiers, who had witnessed the looks and words of Jesus upon his way to Calvary, and while dying upon the cross, were softened by what they had witnessed, and were restrained from marring him by breaking his limbs. Thus was prophecy fulfilled, which declared that a bone of him should not be broken; and the law of the passover, requiring the sacrifice to be perfect and whole, was also fulfilled in the offering of the Lamb of God. "They shall leave none of it unto the morning, nor break any bone of it; according to all the ordinances of the passover they shall keep it." {3SP 171.2} {5Red 91.1} |

Yet this disappointment was not so great as was that experienced by the disciples at the time of Christ's first advent. When Jesus rode triumphantly into Jerusalem, his followers believed that he was about to ascend the throne of David, and deliver Israel from her oppressors. With high hopes and joyful anticipations they vied with one another in showing honor to their King. Many spread their outer garments as a carpet in his path, or strewed before him the leafy branches of the palm. In their enthusiastic joy they united in the glad acclaim, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" When the Pharisees, disturbed and angered by this outburst of rejoicing, wished Jesus to rebuke his disciples, he replied, "If these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out." [LUKE 19:40.] Prophecy must be fulfilled. The disciples were accomplishing the purpose of God; yet they were doomed to a bitter disappointment. But a few days had passed ere they witnessed the Saviour's agonizing death, and laid him in the tomb. Their expectations had not been realized in a single particular, and their hopes died with Jesus. [ACTS 17:3.] In like manner was prophecy fulfilled in the first and second angels' messages. They were given at the right time, and accomplished the work which God designed to accomplish by them. {4SP 253.2} |

As the five women were praying that December morning in South Portland, one question was uppermost in their minds: Was the experience through which they had just passed in 1844 one in which God led? Was prophecy fulfilled on October 22, or was their experience a delusion without sound scriptural support and without the leadings of the Spirit of God? In their hearts they cried out, "Why, oh, why were we disappointed?" {1BIO 59.2} |
