Luke 21: 11 to 18 > Persecution because of Jesus

| And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. |
| Verse 12 > But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute [you], delivering [you] up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake. |
| Verse 13 > And it shall turn to you for a testimony. |
| Verse 14 > Settle [it] therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer: |
| Verse 15 > For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist. |
| Verse 16 > And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and [some] of you shall they cause to be put to death. |
| Verse 17 > And ye shall be hated of all [men] for my name's sake. |
| Verse 18 > But there shall not an hair of your head perish. |

| There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places and fearful events and great signs from heaven. |
| v. 12 > But before all this, they shall lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogies and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. |

| v. 14 > But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. |
| v. 15 > For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. |
| v. 16 > You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death |
| v. 17 > All men will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will perish. |

| The remnant church will be brought into great trial and distress. Those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus will feel the ire of the dragon and his hosts. Satan numbers the world as his subjects, he has gained control of the apostate churches; but here is a little company that are resisting his supremacy. If he could blot them from the earth, his triumph would be complete. As he influenced the heathen nations to destroy Israel, so in the near future he will stir up the wicked powers of earth to destroy the people of God. All will be required to render obedience to human edicts in violation of the divine law. Those who will be true to God and to duty will be menaced, denounced, and proscribed. Stephen, the foremost of the seven deacons, was a man of deep piety and broad faith. Though a Jew by birth, he spoke the Greek language and was familiar with the customs and manners of the Greeks. He therefore found opportunity to preach the gospel in the synagogues of the Greek Jews. He was very active in the cause of Christ and boldly proclaimed his faith. Learned rabbis and doctors of the law engaged in public discussion with him, confidently expecting an easy victory. But "they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake." Not only did he speak in the power of the Holy Spirit, but it was plain that he was a student of the prophecies and learned in all matters of the law. He ably defended the truths that he advocated and utterly defeated his opponents. To him was the promise fulfilled, "Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer: for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist." | Those who are true to God will be menaced, denounced, proscribed. They will be "betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends," even unto death. Luke 21:16. Their only hope is in the mercy of God; their only defense will be prayer. As Joshua pleaded before the Angel, so the remnant church, with brokenness of heart and unfaltering faith, will plead for pardon and deliverance through Jesus, their Advocate. They are fully conscious of the sinfulness of their lives, they see their weakness and unworthiness; and they are ready to despair. {PK 588.1} |
