| Ellen White was given a two part message from God for two hours. The first part was practical counsel to meet specific problems with the local congregation she was visiting and the second part was a broad message, a cosmic sweep of the ages-long war "beetween Christ and His angels, and Satan and his angels. |

Satan tried to prevent the book from being written and struck her with a paralysis in Jackson, Michigan on March 16, 1858. She did not think she would live through it. But God healed her and preserved her life from the attack of Satan. She had a work to do, God wanted a special book to be written. That book started as the 219 page Spiritual Gifts, Volume 1 and over the next 40 years God added to it.

| It finally appeared as the five volume Conflick of Ages series which were published as Patriarchs and Prophets (1890, 754 pages); Prophets and Kings (1917, 73 pages), The Desire of Ages (1898, 835 pages); The Acts of the Apostles (1911, 602 pages) and The Great Controversy (1911, 678 pages) - a total of 3,602 pages all grew from the earlier 219 page book, Spiritual Gifts, Volume 1 |
